FORT KNOX, Ky. - On Friday, July 9, the 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) held a Family Day event at Pierce Elementary on Fort Knox.

Originally scheduled for Keyes Park near Fort Knox's Patton Museum, the event moved to the school because of thunderstorm threats in the surrounding areas.

Despite the bad weather, the event was a fun way of relaxing for the command, which had just completed its second staff exercise. The Family Day served as a way to bring 3d ESC Soldiers, Families, and friends together for a day of fun.

"When we said that we wanted to promote Family fun and team building, that's exactly what we wanted to do," said Master Sgt. Jacquelyn Morgan, the 3d ESC's Family Day organizer. "We wanted to have an event in which everyone could have a good and time and connect as a team."

The 3d ESC's Family day began with a fun run, in which Family members were invited to attend. After the run, Soldiers and Family members went to Pierce Elementary where they enjoyed card and board games, relay races and even tug of war matches between platoons. Kid's activities included limbo contests, an inflatable castle and the water balloon toss.

Morgan, the 3d ESC host nation logistics noncommissioned officer in charge and Chicago, Ill., native, received the tasking to organize the Family day event after her successful organization of the Black History month observation while the unit was deployed to Haiti.

Morgan said that even though it was a tough mission, it was a success amongst those able to participate. During planning process, she admitted that the events biggest hurdle was communication, with most of her committee members working in different staff sections and capacities throughout the command.

This caused for slow progression early in the Family Day's planning stages, but excitement grew as time passed.

"In the beginning stages, it was just difficult to get everyone involved in the Family day event together in the same place, and on the same page," said Morgan.

"I really enjoyed the Family day as it gives me something to look forward to when I have my own Family," said Private Brittnei Dumas, an executive administrative assistance with the 3d ESC and Trenton, New Jersey native.

Despite a rainy day which altered some of the day's events, Morgan considered the day to be a success. She said that she was thankful for a committee committed to having a successful Family day event.

"I couldn't have done this without the assistance of everyone who helped with the event," said Morgan. "This day was a success because they made it a success."
