FORT HOOD, Texas - Hundreds of families and friends were crowded inside the Kieschnick physical fitness center on Support Avenue for the homecoming ceremony of the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).
Approximately 240 Soldiers from the 13th ESC headquarters redeployed July 3.
Brig. Gen. Paul L. Wentz also returned with his troops. Wentz, the commanding general of the 13th ESC, addressed the anxious crowd and his Soldiers very briefly before dismissing them to their families.
"Your Soldiers did an amazing job," said Wentz. "They are absolute heroes."
"I couldn't be more proud of the work they did and the love and support of our family readiness groups and the rear detachment," said Wentz. "You all were back here doing what you do so we could do what we do over there. Your support was unbelievable. Thank you so much."
With the exception of a few companies deployed right now, this is the first time in a few years that the majority of the 13th ESC has been together at the same time at Fort Hood.
The other units that help make up the sustainment command include: the 4th Sustainment Brigade, 1st Medical Brigade, and the 15th Sustainment Brigade which is slated to move to Fort Bliss, Texas later this year.
"This kind of closes up the whole family," said Col. Larry Phelps, the commander of the Wagonmasters Brigade. "It reunites us all back in the same place for the first time in a long time."
Phelps said that the remaining 27 Soldiers from the 15th Sust. Bde. also redeployed with the 13th ESC troops.
"They just got done closing Key West. They were our base closure team," he said. "Now every Soldier that deployed with the Wagonmasters is back safely with their families."
Key West or Q-West is the term Soldiers use to call the Qayyarah West Airfield in northern Iraq.
The 13th ESC supported Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn throughout Iraq during their year-long deployment.
