The demands of operations conducted in the current and near-future operational environment are myriad. The operations officer, or S-3, is the commander's primary assistant in almost every aspect of planning, coordination, conduct of training, and operations.
This handbook offers troop-leading procedures as well as useful tactics, techniques, and procedures to maintain and improve S-3 efficiency and effectiveness. The concepts outlined in this handbook will assist an operations officer in managing and synchronizing the numerous and sometimes simultaneous operations of the unit.

Established by the Army in 1985, CALL has the mission to collect, analyze, disseminate, integrate, and archive lessons learned. Although CALL is an Army organization, customers include organizations in the joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational areas.
CALL has full-time analysts in the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) schools and centers, the combat training centers, and operational units in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the United States. Their purpose is to enhance rapid information sharing and facilitate the integration of best practices and issue resolution across the Army.
