PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - In what turned out to be a competition much tougher than originally predicted, Jason Melofchik, Contract Specialist with the Army Contracting Command, polished away 33 chicken wings in eight minutes during the first chicken wing eating competition at Bucky's here April 15.

Competitors were given plates of 50 wings and challenged to eat as many as they could within the eight-minute time limit.

Entrants donated $10 to the Army Emergency Relief fund while spectators could place wages on their favorite contestant or contestants.

Going into the contest, competitors politely talked trash thinking it may provide an advantage over some or all of the other 14 participants.

However, that is when Walter Wurster walked through the door at Bucky's and said that he would physically eat the bones if he had to.

Being a participant in the event, a sudden feeling of nervousness washed over me and mental defeat set in.

However, in the end it was Melofchik who surprised us all by beating out Tom Carty, manager at Forge Fitness by just one wing.

While the highlight did not make ESPN, Melofchik did let us all in on his game plan.

"My strategy was to eat until time ran out with no water breaks," Melofchik said.

The event was hosted by the Army Community Service office here and generated a total of $291 for the Army Emergency Relief Fund.

AER is the Army's own emergency financial assistance organization and is dedicated to helping the Army Take care of its own. AER provides commanders a valuable asset in accomplishing their basic command responsibility for the morale and welfare of soldiers.
