REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- They are the world - and for the month of April, they are a reason for celebration.

April 1 marked the beginning of Month of the Military Child, and on Redstone Arsenal, a kickoff parade at the Child Development Center was just the first of many activities designed to bring recognition to the military children in the community, and a smile to their little faces. This year's theme, "Everyday heroes in your community," honors the important role military children play in the Army family. Whether they are the child of a Soldier or a civilian, all are affected by the mission.

"We know there's a lot of sacrifices, not only for the spouse, but also for the children," Garrison deputy commander Curtis Clark told the crowd of parents gathered for the parade. "I want to thank you for all you do for the Army and for your children. They are our future."

Balloons, streamers, banners and artwork decorated the CDC in honor of the celebration as music played and each class, dressed in a different color T-shirt, played a special role in the celebration. Whether it be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, singing a verse of "We are the World," or proudly waving the American flag, each child brought a little bit of joy to the event.

After a few words by Clark, a ribbon cutting officially opened the monthlong celebration, followed by a parade around the CDC and dance party.

The fun will continue through April. Events include an Easter egg hunt, Fun Run, Olympic Day and concert.
