FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Miss Alabama Liz Cochran, Miss Wiregrass Area 2010 Jaye Herrod and several other Miss Alabama preliminary titleholders show their appreciation and support for Fort Rucker and its Soldiers with a visit to post April 9.

At about 4 p.m., the titleholders present a free talent performance at the Post Theater for the Fort Rucker community. The performance, open to the public, allows the young women to showcase their talents and entertain the community.

Before their performance and autograph signing, the Miss Alabama preliminary titleholders hope to experience a day in the life of a Soldiers here through participation in activities, hands-on-demonstrations and briefs.

The all-day visit also gives the women a chance to eat lunch with Soldiers at the dining facility and tour Fort Rucker.

Herrod said her similar experience with Miss Georgia's "Salute to the Troops" at Fort Benning, Ga., forever changed her.

"The purpose for this event is to give Miss Alabama contestants the gift to experience the time, skill, commitment and 'heart' a total stranger is willing to invest in order to protect each of them personally," she said. "It's an opportunity to be truly and sincerely grateful and express that gratitude."

Miss Wiregrass Area Director Patricia Janasky echoed Herrod's sentiments about thanking the troops for their service.

"As an Army wife of 30 years, I know personally of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make for us and sacrifices their Families make as well," Janasky said. "I am proud of our military and there are no words to express the gratitude I feel. This program is an opportunity to show the appreciation we feel for our troops."

Miss Alabama preliminary titleholders compete for Miss Alabama in June, and the winner advances to compete for the title of Miss America.
