PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. Aca,!" Fort Ord Reuse Authority officials urge drivers using General Jim Moore Boulevard to comply with temporarily reduced speed limits and other traffic-control measures that are in effect while extensive improvements to the thoroughfare are under construction.
Aca,!A"General JimAca,!A? is a much-used roadway that runs north and south for 6.9 miles between an intersection with Inter-Garrison Road near the center of former Fort Ord to an intersection with Canyon Del Rey Road in Del Rey Oaks. Canyon Del Rey Road connects with Fremont Boulevard in Monterey and Highway 68. Many who drive to and from Ord Military Community and the campus of California State University Monterey Bay make use of these routes.
While road surface construction is in progress, drivers on a section of General Jim Moore Boulevard south of the Coe Avenue intersection will be diverted to gravel-covered temporary lanes with reduced speed limits.
Fort Ord Reuse Authority officials have been overseeing improvements to General Jim Moore Boulevard in phases that began in October 2004 and to intersecting Eucalyptus Road in phases that began in October 2008. The current phases of both projects got underway in December 2009 and are scheduled to be completed in December 2010. The work has been contracted to Top Grade Construction Inc., based in Livermore.
Planned improvements to General Jim Moore Boulevard include:
Aca,!Ac Widening the road to four travel lanes separated by a center median and with an eight-foot shoulder on each side.
Aca,!Ac Adding bicycle lanes, curbs and concrete sidewalks to each side of the road.
Aca,!Ac Adding gutters on the westerly side of the road.
Aca,!Ac Installing potable and recycled waterlines.
Planned improvements to Eucalyptus Road include:
Aca,!Ac Repaving and widening the two travel lanes and providing eight-foot shoulders.
Aca,!Ac Adding bicycle lanes, curbs and gutters and concrete sidewalks on each side of the road.
Improvements to General Jim Moore Boulevard between Eucalyptus Road and Normandy Avenue have been completed and provide a preview of the improvements to come. Formerly known as North-South Road, General Jim Moore Boulevard was re-named for Lt. Gen. James E. Moore Jr., whose Army career included command of the 7th Infantry Division and Fort Ord.
