PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - On March 2, General Ann E. Dunwoody, Commanding General of the Army Materiel Command, lunched with U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, who represents the congressional district in which Picatinny is located; Lt. Gen. William N. Phillips, former Picatinny Commanding General and current Military Deputy and Director for the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology; Brig. Gen. Larry Wyche, Joint Munitions and Lethality Life Cycle Management Command Commanding General; Dr. Joseph A. Lannon, Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center Director; and several other Picatinny and military officials to discuss installation operations and Picatinny technological support to the warfighter.
Afterwards Dunwoody toured several Picatinny laboratories and facilities, including the Prototyping Integration Facility where new products and manufacturing processes are designed.
In addition, she met with Army program development and management teams based here whose programs include remote weapons stations, small-caliber ammunition, counter-improvised explosive device systems and mortar fire control systems. Many of these items are currently seeing service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Picatinny officials said they enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their wares to the AMC leader.
"General Dunwoody was very impressed with the work that the Picatinny workforce does to support our warfighters in the current fight and the future fight. She was also impressed with the great enthusiasm that the workforce displayed in presenting their work and supporting our warfighters," said Lannon.
During the tour, Dunwoody recognized the presenters by handing out coins and thanking them for their service.
Phillips echoed these sentiments during the tour.
"Picatinny is a national treasure that does extraordinary work for the Department of Defense, our warfighters and our nation," Phillips said.
As the AMC commanding general, Dunwoody oversees one of the largest commands in the Army and is responsible for the materiel readiness -technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection and sustainment -of the force.
Picatinny plays a unique role in the AMC mission.
No other comprehensive armaments facility like it exists in the country. It is the source of more than 90 percent of the lethal mechanisms used by the Army and other military services, making it a true Department of Defense Center.
