REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala.--"We have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and our schools. We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible," said President Barack Obama.

U.S. Army Materiel Command's Equal Employment office is investing in the youth of Huntsville, Ala. by partnering with the Academy for Science and Foreign Language in the Adopt a School program beginning Dec. 14.

"By working in the classroom, engaging in after school tutoring and career day AMC is making a difference one student at a time," said Jean James, director of AMC's Equal Employment Opportunity office.

"We are trying to reach out to our local community and support them," said Christina Page, program manager of the Adopt a School partnership.

The program offers tutoring in all subjects every Monday from 3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. and volunteers are still needed.

"We need volunteers to make this happen. We are hoping leadership will allow their employees to volunteer," said Page. "We want everyone to know we work with the same school for the duration of the school year. There is not a cut-off. You can volunteer anytime."

Last year the Adopt a School partnership was a success with Providence Classical School and the Academy for Science and Foreign Language.

"Since we had such a good relationship with the school last year, we decided to continue with this school," said Page.

Vergis Davis volunteered last year and spent his time with two classes, totaling 41 students.

"It was a rewarding experience," said Davis.

The thank you sign still hangs from his wall with the signatures of his students in reds, yellows, blues and purples.

Please contact Christina Page at 256-450-9091, email or Vergus Davis at 256-450-9088, email with your questions, concerns and ways to volunteer.
