Over the past year in UQ09, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in conjunction with Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) explored sustaining balance in the future force as an integral component of a unified government approach to national security.
Representatives from academia, the national security community, the other services, senior military leaders, and Army Service Component Commands participated in more than 13 events resulting in nine key insights approved by Gen. Martin Dempsey, commanding general of TRADOC. The insights covered a broad range of topics including leader development, security force assistance, generating force, and homeland defense. In addition, Gen. Dempsey signed separate memorandums for the commanders of SOCOM, JFCOM and HQDA requesting support as the Army moves forward with implementing recommendations derived from UQ09 insights.
Unified Quest (UQ) is the Army's continuing study of the future operational environment designed to isolate and frame issues vital to current and future force development. The study comprises a series of wargames, seminars, workshops and conferences serving as the Chief of Staff of the Army's primary mechanism to explore enduring operational challenges and the conduct of full spectrum operations.
The theme for UQ10 is "A Balanced and Prepared Army for an Uncertain Future." The purpose is to assist Army leaders to understand, visualize, describe and direct efforts to restore balance in the current force and ensure the Army remains prepared to achieve its strategic purpose as an integral element of landpower.
