ARL welcomes Dr. Eric L. Moore as acting director.

ADELPHI, Md.— The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM, Army Research Laboratory welcomes Dr. Eric L. Moore as the lab’s new acting director.

Moore began Oct. 1 and is now leading the service’s only foundational research lab. ARL bridges academia, industry and Army expertise to ensure basic science continues to spur innovation and new technologies to give warfighters the decisive edge now and in the future.

As acting director, Moore leads highly skilled Army technical experts across scientific spectrums, including cutting-edge quantum computing, materials, energy sciences, biotechnology and human performance.

“I am honored to lead this remarkable organization that is truly the intellectual hub for the Army,” Moore said. “ARL is on the frontier of science and creates a wave of innovation for the nation in its wake. For example, while the world is just now adapting to AI, ARL was investing in that research decades ago. I’m excited to work with these experts who continue to push boundaries to ensure the Army stays ahead of our adversaries for years to come.”

Based in Adelphi, Md., ARL has seven locations across the country housing world-class facilities and offices and partners to accelerate innovation.

Moore has nearly four decades of combined military and federal service and was appointed to the Senior Executive Service Aug. 21, 2016. In the Army, senior executives are the civilian counterparts of general officers.

Moore joined ARL after serving as the deputy to the commanding general at DEVCOM headquarters for three years. In that role, he provided strategic direction for the organization and served as the catalyst for research, development and engineering initiatives across the command.

Previously, Moore served as director of the DEVCOM Chemical Biological Center, formerly known as the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center. His first assignment as an SES was the ECBC director for research and technology.

An expert in chemical and biological defense programs and medical countermeasures, Moore previously served in multiple positions at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency including chief of the Advanced and Emerging Threat Division and chief of the Basic and Supporting Science Division.

Prior to his civilian service, Moore served as an Army officer, with a career culminating at the Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center as the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Senior Scientific and Technical Intelligence Officer for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear medical countermeasures worldwide.

Moore earned a doctorate in neurophysiology from Meharry Medical College and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Fisk University. He was commissioned as an Army officer through the U.S. Army ROTC at Vanderbilt University.

His civilian and military awards include the Federal Laboratory Consortium Laboratory Director of the Year, Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak leaf cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal (1 bronze star).
