FORT BENNING, GA - The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and Outdoor Recreation will host the annual Youth Sportsman Day, sponsored by the U.S. Youth Sportsmen's Alliance, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at USAMU's Hook Range.

"This is will give kids a chance to get outdoors, have fun and learn about outdoor sports," said Brittany Beadle, outdoor recreation specialist. "And hopefully they will continue whatever sport they learn."

Boys and girls, ages 5-16, can participate in the free event. Youth Sportsman Day will include a BB gun and shotgun shoot, an archery shoot, casting lessons by the youth Benning Bass Club, turkey call demonstration, hunting dog demonstration by Mulberry Creek Kennels and a shotgun demonstration by 2008 Olympic gold medalists SPC Glenn Eller and SPC Vincent Hancock.

Outdoor Recreation will provide free lunch from Destiny Dogs.

In previous years, there has been around 300 people in attendance at the event, Beadle said. This year, she hopes for the same turnout or better.

Beadle said preregistration is encouraged but not necessary. To preregister, call Beadle at 706-545-9636 or go to www.ussportsmen.org/trailblazer/fortbenning. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event. The event is open to the public.
