FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- Approximately 200 golfers attended the sixth annual Clark Cares Open Golf Tournament Sept. 30 at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club.

Originally known as the Clark-Pinnacle Classic, the tournament has transformed its name but has still endured a tremendous amount of success in six years. This year was no different.

The 2009 tournament raised more than $140,000 for donation to area schools and the Soldier Family Assistance Center.

According to Casey Nolan of Clark Realty Capital, LLC, funding will be presented to four schools: Belvoir Elementary School, Woodlawn Elementary School, Walt Whitman Middle School and Mount Vernon High School.

In addition to those four schools, SFAC will also receive funding to go towards Fort Belvoir's Warrior Transition Unit.

"The reason we chose those four schools is because we wanted to make sure that those funds touched the schools that Belvoir children attend," Nolan said. "The schools are very excited about taking the proceeds and investing in technology such as smart boards for their classrooms.

"Some of the proceeds will also go to the SFAC, specifically the WTU here at Belvoir," Nolan added.

Tournament sponsors played an integral role in the event's success and, according to Nolan, many returned from past years.

"We had three sponsorship levels and we had just as many sponsors as previous years," Nolan said. "We are happy to say we have a handful of sponsors who have been sponsors for all six years.

"It just shows the commitment to what we think is a great event and it helps the Belvoir community," Nolan said.

With the overwhelming number of players, the tournament was spread across both the Gunston and Woodlawn courses.

Players played under a scramble format and each course had a longest drive, and closest to the pin contest for men and women.

The overall winner was the team of Jim Birch from Breeden Heating and Air, Lee Carol from Breeden Mechanical, Jerry Donahue from Classic Design Tile and John Warren from Clark Builders Group.

The group shot a 13-under par, 59, on the Woodlawn course.

In addition to the winning group, there were a good amount of raffle prizes given away after the dinner.

"We have a ton of raffle prizes donated by our gracious sponsors, including flat screen televisions, a full set of golf clubs, an Apple computer, an iPod Touch and $800 of airline gift certificates," Nolan said.
