Blankets covered the floor of the Balfour Beatty Communities Center room on Sept. 18 as moms, child care providers, toddlers and teddy bears gathered for a special picnic.

"Is this based on the song'" Lillian Harris asked LifeWorks coordinator Kelly Barchanowicz, who coordinated the teddy bear picnic.

Barchanowicz had never heard of the song about teddy bears taking a picnic rather it was based on a childhood event.

"Where I'm from, in kindergarten, it's a big thing," said Barchanowicz, who remembers a photo of her appearing in her hometown newspaper after the kindergarten event.

Harris, whose husband is Col. Marc Harris, commander of the 35th Signal Brigade, brought 2 year-old Lily to the program which included an array of sandwiches, apples, cookies and string cheese as well as Berenstain Bears stories read by Barchanowicz.

"Our Family Readiness Groups made teddy bears for the children of deployed Soldiers," said Harris, who thought the picnic was the "cutest idea."
