FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — During or around the week of March 18, many Fort Leonard Wood area school districts will be dismissed for spring break, allowing staff and students time to reset prior to a strong finish to the school year. We thank our school districts and employees for all they do for every family, including our military children and families, and wish them a relaxing break. During this time off from school, Fort Leonard Wood civilians and service members may request leave or pass to spend time with their families.

Prior to spring break, every leader — military and civilian — should speak with those in their care about living our values 24/7, and the importance of risk management and accident avoidance.

There is typically an increase in alcohol-related accidents and incidents during spring break and around St. Patrick’s Day. Alcohol use increases risk in every activity by slowing response times, distorting vision, and impairing judgment. If you drink, do so responsibly; have a plan that includes a designated driver or ride-share service, and follow that plan. If you are driving, stay sober, ensure you and all in your care use safety devices, and stay focused on the task of driving. Prepare your vehicles and adjust driving speed based on weather conditions. Never attempt to cross a flooded roadway in heavy rains or flash flooding.

Time off and the coming of warmer weather bring an increase of outdoor recreation, requiring additional attention on risk management and safety. Motorcycle riders and recreational vehicle operators must be properly trained and licensed, and wear the appropriate protective equipment, whether on or off post — this includes approved helmets, full-length clothing, gloves, eye protection, and boots. Follow all command policies for off-duty activities. Know the rules and regulations for use recreational shooting ranges and participating in spring turkey hunting season in April. Follow weapons safety and all Army policies, regulations, and laws. Follow the waterway regulations when enjoying water borne activities.

As personnel prepare for summer moves, be an effective presence in the lives of those in your care and stay involved with those transitioning in and out of Fort Leonard Wood. Ensure trained sponsors are in place and active for all movers.

Be safe, manage risk and engage with those in your care. We are proud to serve with you!
