Can the Easter Bunny swim?

Well, apparently the answer is ‘yes’ and he’s planning to swim some laps at Redstone’s indoor pool, leaving brightly colored Easter eggs in the pool for kids to swim around and collect in baskets during the Easter Eggstravaganza at the Aquatics Center.

The center’s Easter indoor pool event will have four different age groups starting at different times. Age 4 and under, with assistance from a parent or guardian, will hunt for floating Easter eggs from 10-10:30 a.m. The 5 to 8-year-olds will swim after the plastic eggs from 10:45-11:15 a.m. Age 9 to 12 swim for bunny eggs from noon-12:30 p.m. Finally, the older kids will dive for eggs (actually dive sticks) from 12:45-1:15 p.m.

“Families can expect to have a great time,” Lori Ciranni, director of sports, fitness, and aquatics, said.

For the younger there are plastic floating eggs, and they just get in the pool and see how many they can get.

For the older age group, there are submerged eggs. But they’re not going to be eggs, they will be submerged dive sticks. And there’s a story behind that, Ciranni said.

“Trying to submerge eggs last year, it was a nightmare!” she said, laughing. “We had to put nuts and bolts in the eggs to keep the plastic Easter eggs from floating. The kids would bust open the eggs and return nuts and bolts for candy.”

Things have changed for this, the second Easter Eggstravaganza, she said. “We’re not doing that this year. We just bought dive sticks that will sink on their own.” So, no swapping nuts and bolts for candy this year, just the dive stick.

There’s going to be some time for free swimming, too; while there’s no Easter egg hunts there will time for everyone to go swimming.

Make sure you bring a basket of some kind to collect the eggs. The Aquatics Center is not providing anything to collect the eggs and no plastic bags are allowed.

And don’t worry about packing lunch. “There’s lunch provided. You can get hot dog, chips and water after we’re done with the egg hunts,” Ciranni said.

There will be prizes for winners of each event and, of course, there will be candy.

If you’re lucky, you might see a big bunny doing the backstroke.

The Easter Eggstavaganza costs $10 and takes place the Aquatics Center on March 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
