Memorial pays tribute to Maryland Vietnam vets

BALTIMORE – A memorial in Baltimore pays tribute to all Maryland Vietnam veterans. The memorial features a granite circle with 1,046 names inscribed on it, consisting of all Maryland residents who served and lost their lives in the Vietnam War from 1955-1975.

A granite marker in the memorial reads: “Marylanders, while in this place pause to recall our nation’s ideals. Its promise, its abundance, and our continuing responsibilities toward the shared fulfillment of our aspirations. Remember too, those whose sacrifices underlie these blessings.”

The memorial grounds are approximately three acres in size and include park benches for visitors to take time to reflect. Keith Brown, superintendent of the Maryland Veterans Memorial and Monuments Program invites the APG community to visit the memorial.

“The Maryland Vietnam Memorial stands as a place of remembrance for the Maryland residents who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during the Vietnam War,” he said. “Their sacrifice allows us to exercise the freedoms that we have today. It also is a place where people can say thank you to those who defended our values and give respect for the valor they showed in battle.”

The memorial, which is located at the head of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, also known as the Hanover Street Bridge, was dedicated on May 28, 1989.

In 1989, the Veterans Memorials and Monuments Program was formed to operate, maintain, secure, and preserve veterans’ memorials and monuments (Chapter 790, Acts of 1989).
