FORT RILEY, Kan. - Fort Riley employees in non-supervisory roles have the opportunity to advance their careers through the Employee Development Program, a series of courses that provide training in basic skills to improve workplace productivity. EDP is currently enrolling for courses that will begin in September and October.
EDP is a program in conjunction with Barton Community College. Participants may, therefore, be eligible to earn college credit at no cost while developing their management and leadership skills.
"It is a cross between the curriculum that Barton offers and what skills we tell them are important for our people to have," said Kathy Bassett, workforce development chief for Fort Riley.
With three different levels, the courses help employees build a toolkit of skills and make them more marketable in a competitive work environment, said Bassett.
"It's a good overall curriculum to enlighten employees on what's important to do well in their jobs," Bassett said. "It's important that they take this training and learn how to take a leadership role within their organization."
Level I training begins Sept. 10 and covers Army correspondence, basic communications, leadership theories, customer service and basic human resource development concepts.
Level II introduces advanced management concepts and theories, including advanced communication, practical strategies to handle conflict management, interpersonal relations, motivational theories and job design. The course will also cover mentoring, changes in the workplace and strategies for effective meetings.
Bassett said level II participants also benefit from guest speakers from the installation attending to share mentoring techniques and ideas. Level II begins Oct. 13.
Level III, the newest level that began last spring, will take place this fall beginning Sept. 3. Participants in this upper-level class will build upon previous levels and discuss advanced leadership theory, effective leadership practices and change management.
All levels are six-day courses with one day of coursework from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every two to three weeks. Classes are held in building 212 at the Workforce Development Division Classroom.
"This is a program that is really designed to develop non-supervisory employees who routinely don't get as much attention for this type of training as supervisors, Bassett said. "It's just another opportunity for those people to get more depth of understanding at how Fort Riley operates."
Bassett encourages any interested employees to register online through the Civilian Human Resources Training Application System at https://www.atrrs.army.mil/channels/chrtas/default.asp. Those registering should select FY 09, Region: SW-108, Course number OB8AED18, OB8AED28 or OB8AED38, for levels I, II and III, respectively; Class: R02.
