FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established a navy to help our nation in its struggle for independence. Beginning with a fleet of just six frigates, our current, modern U.S. Navy provides critical capabilities to our armed forces, including worldwide power projection and deterrence to our adversaries.

This year’s Navy Birthday theme, “On Watch — 24/7 for 247 Years,” highlights the role our Navy has played in every major U.S. military campaign. Serving in times of war and peace, the men and women of our Navy maintain the freedom of sea, air and land routes.

At Fort Leonard Wood, we proudly serve alongside Sailors, Seabees and Navy civilians, who play a key role in military readiness and who lead with honor, courage and commitment. We are very proud to serve with them here in the heart of our nation!

Please join us in celebrating the rich history and heritage, along with the bright future of our Navy. Happy birthday, United States Navy!
