Thirty-three powerlifters competed for team and individual honors at the IMCOM-Europe and USAG Bavaria Powerlifting Championships in Bavaria Dec. 4.

Austin Denham from Vilseck won the competition as best male lifter for his combined 1708.5 pounds in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

Tracy Amadi from Vilseck won the competition as the best female lifter, for a combined lift of 909.5 pounds in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

WIESBADEN, Germany – Thirty-three competitors from six installations across four garrisons came together at the Memorial Fitness Center on Rose Barracks for the IMCOM-Europe and USAG Bavaria powerlifting championships Dec. 4.

“It was a partnership with the garrison and a very good event, great lifters, and great family members supporting the lifters,” said Aaron Jones, from IMCOM-Europe Community Recreation.

The day was long for a number of reasons, Jones said, including the need for athletes to rest between lifts, preparing the weights during events, and, according to the USAG Bavaria event manager, ensuring COVID mitigation measures were strictly followed.

“This event was a little different, because we’re still in the pandemic,” said Serge Kearse, chief of sports and fitness for USAG Bavaria, describing the staggering of different groups of lifters in one area, while the next and third groups waited elsewhere. “We wanted to make sure we met the risk mitigation measures.”

The three flights – groups of competitors – included women of all weight Categories and two groups of men, separated by weight class. For all participants, the contest included the bench press, deadlift and squat.

Both Jones and Kearse extended special thanks to the USAG Bavaria Better Opportunities for Single Servicemembers, who provided 15 Soldiers to help with various duties throughout the event, including spotting lifters and loading weights.

“They did all the heavy lifting, literally,” Jones said.
