Community Events Calendar – May

This monthly calendar listing is prepared by the USAG Fort Lee Public Affairs Office. The inclusion of off-post events is meant to encourage Team Lee members – particularly those new to the area – to go out and explore the many historic, recreational and entertainment activities offered throughout Central and Southeast Virginia. Blues, Brews and BBQ | May 1

Set for 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., this festival will take place at Riverwalk Landing, 331 Water Street, Yorktown. Tickets are required for admission during one-of-two time windows.  For further details and reservations, call 757-877-2933.

Newcomers Orientation | May 3

Service members, civilian employees and their spouses are invited to this monthly briefing in the Soldier Support Center auditorium, starting at 2 p.m. Participants will learn about various installation activities including the Exchange, Child and Youth Services, Safety, Housing, FMWR and others. Boots to Business | May 4-5

Aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged to participate in the two-day Boots to Business Virtual Workshop hosted by the Fort Lee Transition Assistance Program. All transitioning service members and their spouses, as well as veterans, are welcome. Class size limited to 10 individuals. New Parent Class | May 5

“What to Expect Now That You’re Expecting” is a free class presented by the Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program in building 1231, Mahone Avenue. The session, starting at 1 p.m., will cover body changes during pregnancy, financial considerations, labor and delivery, what dads need to know to support mom, and more. Prayer Run-Walk | May 7

All community members are invited to participate in a National Day of Prayer event at Williams Stadium. It will begin at 7:15 a.m. with a free continental breakfast followed by the Prayer Run-Walk recognizing the first responders, service members and veterans who proudly served and continue to protect our nation. The event is being co-hosted by the Religious Support Office and the Hope and Healing for Heroes organization. For further info, call 804-734-6388.

Virtual Storytime | May 7

Starting at 10 a.m., this activity is sponsored by the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Richmond. Child Educator Tarneshia Evans will read some of her favorite youth stories. The activity takes place every other week. To join in, go to www.facebook.com/LewisGinter.

Basic Drawing Class | May 7

Drawing techniques for beginners will be presented in this Picture Perfect Frame Shop class set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Participants will use pencil and Conte crayons while learning to create strokes with value, gesture and perspective. The class fee is $35. Jamestown Day | May 8

Guests can enjoy a variety of educational, fun and family friendly activities at historic Jamestown Settlement, 2110 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg. This event marks the 414th anniversary of the founding of America’s first permanent English settlement. There is an admission fee to the park. For further information, call 757-253-4838.

Fiesta Night | May 8

All community members are invited to the HideAway club for a special celebration in honor of Cinco De Mayo. The evening will feature fiesta music, specialty drinks, karaoke and door prizes. Mother’s Day Brunch | May 9

The Lee Club invites community members to this special 1-3 p.m. meal featuring prime rib, steamed shrimp, stuffed chicken caprese, a breakfast bar, gourmet desserts, champagne and more. Nine and Wine | May 10

This special event for ladies will feature nine holes of golf followed by wine, finger sandwiches and friendly conversation in the clubhouse. All skill levels are welcome. Fun with Barefoot Puppets | May 12

Starting at 10:30 a.m., this virtual program features a puppet show and art activity that will show children how to turn everyday objects into a puppet of their own. Registration is required. Click here for signup.

Biking in Park | May 12

Starting at 5 p.m., this self-guided mountain bike tour through Battlefield Park features awesome scenery and occasional glimpses of wildlife while serving as a low-stress physical fitness activity at the same time. Bikes and helmets are provided, but participants need to bring their own water. The age limit is 14 and older. Cost is $20 per person, and it is recommended to sign up in advance. Dominion Energy Riverrock | May 14-15

Bicycle races, trail runs, fishing tournaments, scavenger hunts, live concerts and more will be featured at this Downtown Richmond event along the James River. Many activities are free. The rundown of events, times and locations is available at riverrockrva.com.

Breakthrough Car Show | May 15

Set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pamplin Historical Park, 6025 Boyton Plank Road, Petersburg, this event is a classic- and custom-car-lovers’ dream. Hundreds of restored and rebuilt vehicles owned by private collectors will be on display. Food and drinks can be purchased from on-site food vendors. Anger Management Class | May 18

Conducted from noon-1 p.m., this free class on Anger Management will be presented at the Army Community Service facility on Mahone Avenue. Participants will learn techniques to help control anger and to recognize contributing factors. Registration is required. Call 804-734-6381.

Painting on Glass | May 20

Participants of this Picture Perfect Frame Shop-hosted class, set for 6:30-8:30 p.m., will handpaint a wine glass with step-by-step instructions from a skilled artist. The cost is $35 per person. The glass and art supplies are provided. Preregistration is required. Call 804-734-6137.

Still Life Painting | May 21

During this 5:30-7:30 p.m. class, participants will use acrylic paint to create a still-life drawing with step-by-step instruction from the creative team at the Picture Perfect Frame Shop, building 9024, Battle Drive. The class fee is $35 and signup is required. Call 804-734-6137.

Open Play Paintball | May 22

Authorized Family and MWR patrons are invited to this special 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. event to be held at the Paintball Range adjacent to the Outdoor Recreation Center, building 15014, 5th Street. Players must be 13 years of age or older and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The rental cost is $40, which includes a marker, air, face mask and 500 paintballs. Cornhole Tournament | May 22

Prizes are awarded to the top two teams at this HideAway club event that takes place on the second and fourth Saturday of the month. Blackbeard Pirate Festival | May 28-30

Hampton’s waterfront comes alive with dozens of pirate re-enactors costumed in historically accurate garb. The festival also features children’s activities, live music performances, fireworks, food and arts and crafts vendors, and more.
