"When the Soldiers are healthy spiritually, it makes a difference for them and their Families," said Chap. (Lt. Col.) Rodie Lamb, Fort Jackson garrison chaplain.

One of the ways this is accomplished is through events like the Combined Protestant Worship Service held July 21 at the Solomon Center.

"You are in for a great experience today," said Chap. (Col.) Milton Johnson, Fort Jackson's command chaplain to the trainees attending the event. "This is one of the largest groups I have seen over the previous three years. This is the third year I've been" to the service.

The trainees would "experience" something out of the ordinary.

It wasn't just a regular Sunday service on Fort Jackson, it would include live Contemporary Christian music from chart topping acts and a "more powerful message" from Franklin Graham," Lamb said.

Graham, the grandson of the world-renowned evangelist the late Billy Graham, would give a sermon aimed directly at the spiritual health of the attending trainees.

Music was provided by Tedashii Lavoy Anderson, known simply as Tedashii, a Christian Hip Hop artist; and Joshua Havens and Matt Fuqua of the band The Afters.

All trainees attending the service did so voluntarily, Lamb added.

Pvt. Trenton Powers, from 3rd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 61st Infantry Regiment was one of those trainees who volunteered to attend.

"Nobody's mental state in (Basic Combat Training) will be the same as their civilian lives," said Powers during a break in the musical numbers. His unit is about to enter White Phase. "But, I think going to the church service today at least made our day just a little bit brighter."
