CHIÈVRES, Belgium -- Army Command Sgt. Maj. Carolyn Turell assumed responsibility of the 39th Strategic Signal Battalion after receiving the unit colors during a ceremony, June 25, on Chièvres Air Base, Belgium. Turell replaced Army Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy McGuire who took responsibility in July 2017.
Embodying the battalion's motto "Will to Succed," McGuire served as the senior enlisted advisor to a battalion that provides network capabilities throughout Belgium, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, France and northern Germany in order to enable mission command for Army, joint, interagency, intergovernmental and multinational forces. The battalion, which falls under the 2d Theater Signal Brigade, became the first expeditionary strategic signal battalion in Europe.
"Under his watch, the battalion expanded to cover the Atlantic Resolve region in northern Europe," said Army Lt. Col. Ericka Brooks, 39th Strategic Signal Battalion commander.
Brooks also remarked on McGuire and his family's dedication to the battalion and the community.
"Command Sgt. Maj. McGuire and his family are focused on making things better for all members of their unit -- military, civilian, allies, partners and families -- while improving the unit's mission," she added.
McGuire addressed the audience and thanked Soldiers and civilian employees for their teamwork.
"We accomplished a lot of amazing things in these last two years, and I am as proud of my Soldiers and civilians as a leader can be. I want to thank each and every one of you for your grit, determination, professionalism and will to succeed every single day," he said.
McGuire will serve as the Chief Signal NCO G6 of U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
FOLLOWING THE LEGACY
Turell entered the U.S. Army in 1996 from Brentwood, New York. She previously served as the S-3 sergeant major for the 304th Expeditionary Signal Battalion at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys in South Korea.
"I look forward to serving alongside my new battle buddy, Lt. Col. Ericka Brooks, and continuing to enhance the proficiency and quality of life for the battalion," she said.
"The 'Will to Succeed' battalion has a proud history of great leadership, and I hope to contribute to that history."
