BAUMHOLDER, Germany -- Baumholder Middle High School has more to offer its students in the fall with the addition of five Advanced Placement courses for the 2019-2020 school year.
This new addition brings the total to 11 AP courses, which were introduced to students and parents May 2 during the Advanced Placement Parent Student Night at BMHS.
"We are introducing five new AP courses so that we can offer as many opportunities as we can for those students pursuing college goals," said Leah Zamor, BMHS principal, to her students. "I think it's very clear that you will be stretching yourselves in these classes, and we believe you can do it. Just know that you will have to get into the mindset and be ready to work."
AP courses are college-level classes offered in high school that reflect the concepts and curriculum taught in introductory college courses. Toward the end of the class, students take an exam to measure their understanding and mastery of the college-level work. A score of three or higher on the exam can typically earn students college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college. Although the classes are tough and require extra hours of study and schoolwork, students who do well can earn college credit at thousands of universities nationwide.
The AP courses offered at BMHS in the fall include:
Studio Art 2D Design
Studio Art 3D Design
Biology
Calculus AB
Environmental Science
English Language and Composition
English Literature and Composition
German Language
United States Government and Politics
United States History
World History
Staff Sgt. Matthew Brown, 5th Battalion 7th Defense Artillery Regiment, and his wife Bianca were excited about the new AP offerings for their daughter, Alisha.
"I really appreciate the school trying to help the students by offering these college-level activities," said Brown, a Patriot System repairer. "These are great opportunities for them to succeed."
Alisha, who is currently taking Honors World History and Language Arts, would like to enroll in AP English Literature and Composition or AP Language and Composition in the fall.
"It will be a lot of work, but I'm excited for the challenge next year," said the rising junior.
New U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Deputy Garrison Manager Jim Bradford said he's pleased about the new classes.
"We continue to work with our schools, Department of Defense Education Activity leadership and our families to improve educational opportunities and excellence in our schools. One of the ways we are doing that is with AP Night where we are increasing our AP courses at Baumholder Middle High School from seven current AP courses to 11 for the next school year," he said. "We could not do that without an entire team effort to understand what our teenagers need to be ready for college and working with DoDEA to find creative ways to create these educational opportunities."
Lastly, Zamor thanked teachers and counselors who were there to explain the courses and expressed encouraging words to her students.
"We are all here tonight because we all feel you can be successful in these classes," the principal said. "You all have that belief and that grit to persevere through the work intensiveness -- that's what it will take to be successful on the exams and get the credit to move on with your goals. This will be challenging, but we know you can handle this."
