FORT SAM HOUSTON (May 2, 2019)-The U.S. Army is on the road to TwitchCon again. With the help of Army Entertainment and the Army National Guard, the Army is hosting a series of tournaments at military installations leading up to the finals at TwitchCon North America, a convention celebrating Twitch, the leading service and community for multiplayer entertainment.

Soldiers will compete against each other playing Street Fighter V.

This year's live-streamed tournaments include Camp Mabry on May 4, Military District of Washington on May 18, Joint Base Lewis-McChord on June 1, Fort Gordon on June 22 and the finals at TwitchCon North America in San Diego from Sept. 27 to 29. The streams can be found globally on the Army's Twitch account (www.twitch.tv/ArmyEntertainment).

Tournaments that will not be streamed include United States Army Garrison Humphreys on June 14 and Fort Riley on June 22.

The tournament is open to all active-duty Army and Army National Guard Soldiers. Competitors can sign up at the site locations the day of the tournament or pre-register the day before.

Soldiers who win at the installation level move on to play at TwitchCon North America. The grand prize including a Sony PlayStation 4 console, GAEMS mobile gaming station, Street Fighter V, a $500 gift card, will be awarded to the Soldier who wins in the finals.

The first tournaments that take place in May will be hosted in conjunction with the U.S. Army's STRONG B.A.N.D.S. campaign. The program encourages all Soldiers, Family members, veterans, retirees and military civilian employees, to improve their overall physical health and well-being as a vital component of resiliency.

The gaming tournaments are designed to enhance Soldiers' readiness, resiliency and cognitive skills, while showing the unique talents of Soldiers across the Army. Soldiers train for the competition by improving hand-eye coordination, mental focus and reaction time. These skills help improve a Soldier's overall readiness for normal job duties.

The U.S. Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program, the G9 Division of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, has put together the tournaments for the last two years.

In 2018, half of the competitions were live-streamed on their Twitch channel and reached a total of 3.33 million views.

Before the large tournament last year, MWR held other esports events. In 2016 a Gears of War 4 tournament was held at six garrisons, and in 2015 a Halo 5 tournament was held also at six garrisons.
