The Concert Band and Soldiers' Chorus from The United States Army Field Band proudly present a concert featuring Chan Kim, an 11th-grade flutist at Bethesda-Chevy Chase (BCC) High School.
Chosen as the winner of the Field Band's Young Artist Competition, Chan plays principal flute in BCC High's Symphonic Band under the direction of Mr. Marshall White. Chan is also the assistant principal flutist for the Global Mission Church Youth Orchestra and recently performed with the group at the Kennedy Center.
"Chan is an exceptionally gifted musician," affirmed Sgt. 1st Class Jason Stephens, the educational outreach program coordinator for the Field Band. Stephens added, "Her performance throughout the competition was extraordinary. She should be extremely proud of herself as she was selected from a sizeable group of the best high school musicians throughout the Mid-Atlantic region."
Chan, a student of Carolyn H. Oh, has earned memberships into the Maryland All-State and Montgomery All-County Senior Bands for the past two years. Although she is just a high school junior, Chan has received numerous superior ratings at both the Maryland State and Montgomery County Solo Festivals, won the silver prize at the International New Praise Youth Concours this year and has performed with several youth orchestras.
About The United States Army Field Band's Young Artist Competition:
The United States Army Field Band's Young Artist Competition, an educational outreach initiative, is open to high school musicians residing in the Mid-Atlantic area. Applicants submit audio performances of themselves playing a specified selection for their instrument. Finalists travel to Fort Meade, Md., where they perform with an accompanist for a panel of judges. The winner is then invited to perform as a soloist with The U.S. Army Field Band at a designated concert.
