The American flag symbolizes the freedom which we as Soldiers fight to defend, but most individuals don't know what the color teal symbolizes or about the fight that encompasses it. Teal reminds us of our responsibility to be aware of sexual harassment.

The Army culture is built around mission readiness which requires unity on all fronts, from every single Soldier. One largely influential part of the Army culture is the "Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention program." If a Soldier were to feel violated sexually in any way, then not only would they possibly suffer some emotional scarring, but they would no longer be focused solely on the Army's mission.

Perpetrators often are repeat offenders. Why? Because victims of sexual assault are too afraid to speak out, and of what the risk might be, so often they don't say anything.

Much like how pink is associated with breast cancer awareness month, teal is used as a symbol in raising awareness of sexual assault and harassment. The biggest difference though is: in order to stop these horrific incidents from occurring, it requires the combined efforts of each and every individual, not just a single month, but every waking hour of every day in the year.

The color teal serves as a reminder to have situational awareness so we aren't by'stand'ers; instead we stand by the people whose voice need to be heard, so we (the Army) can continue to focus on the mission.
