On 22 June 2018 the Yatesville Lake Office received an emergency call about a sinking boat on Yatesville Lake with four people on board. With no rescue or law enforcement agencies available to assist nor Corps park rangers on duty at the time of the call, Joseph Adkins, Crane Operator and Shane Lemaster, Maintenance Laborer, sprang into action. They notified the Assistant Operations Project Manager and then took a government vessel to locate the distressed vessel on the lake.

The four people and the disabled vessel were rescued and transported to the Yatesville Lake Marina. Joseph Adkins and Shane Lemaster's prompt response likely avoided a more serious incident.

Gene Davis, Operations Project Manager, Big Sandy Area, presented both with an on-the-spot award to recognize their assistance in recovering the distressed vessel. Due to their efforts and prompt response, the vessel was safety towed to the Marina and all occupants were safely removed from the vessel.
