Each year in March, we observe National Women's History Month -- a time when we pause to honor the equal and critical role women have played in shaping American history and to show appreciation for their tremendous contributions to our great nation.
This year's theme, "Nevertheless She Persisted: Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination Against Women," celebrates the heroic females -- past and present -- who pioneered positive change despite societal boundaries, each with an incredible story of inspiration that paved the way for future generations.
During Women's History Month, we should also honor the sacrifice of female service members since before the birth of our nation.
Early patriots, like Deborah Sampson and Dr. Mary Walker overcame incredible odds fighting alongside men, and their actions sparked the influence of gender parity within our military.
Today, capable females serve in combat occupations and continue to exemplify the highest values of our all-volunteer force.
At Fort Leonard Wood, we are successful because of the collective talents of our diverse team. Please take time to thank our female Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and DoD civilians for their commitment to our national security, and their role in writing the next chapter of American history.
