CHIÈVRES, Belgium -- People from around the world gathered in Bastogne, Belgium, Dec. 16 to 17, to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. U.S. Army Garrison Benelux Soldiers, leaders, and community members, from young to old, participated in the anniversary events. In the morning, people braved the cold weather and walked in the 40th Bastogne Historic Walk.

In the afternoon, commemorations continued as a patriotic parade took place on the town streets. Along the parade route, distinguished guests and leaders laid wreaths at Army Gen. George Patton and Army Gen. Anthony McAuliffe's squares. The official commemoration culminated in a nut-throwing ceremony outside city hall, which is a nod to McAuliffe's famous response to a German surrender ultimatum during the famous battle. In addition to the commemoration events in Bastogne, several scouts from Pack 457 in Brussels participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Château de Recogne, the German Military Cemetery, located outside Foy, Belgium.
