WIESBADEN, Germany -- Vigilance and safety are some of the best things we can engage in as Soldiers and civilians.

U.S. Army Europe Soldiers and civilians are required to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

It is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling abroad to enroll their trips with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

"Department of State provides a wide range of information, such as access to country information, travel alerts and warnings, maps, regional contact information, safe haven locations, and so much more." said Keith Horne, U.S. Army Europe Force Protection Specialist.

The intent of STEP is to ensure the U.S. Embassy can contact you in an emergency, whether there is a natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency. STEP also helps you receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.

"You go to the website to enroll, follow the prompts, enter the data of the locations that you're going to, and what that does for you is while you're traveling if something were to happen you will receive any pertinent information, and along with that, the state department will know that you are at that location. It's a great assistance tool for a time of need, if there happens to come a time of need. " Horne said, "You can choose to enroll any of your family members as well to receive the alerts."
