WIESBADEN, Germany -- Senior U.S. Army Europe staff met with the mayor of Gdansk, Poland, Sept. 5, in advance of the arrival of combat vehicles from the next rotational armored brigade in Europe.
Meeting with Mayor Pawel Adamowicz were Brig. Gen. Fred Maiocco, deputy commanding general, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Mike Anderson, director, European Host Nation Relations, U.S. Army Europe, and other staff members.
The vehicles, which are set to arrive next week, belong to the 2nd Armored Combat Brigade Team, 1st Infantry Division, based in Fort Riley, Kansas.
Adamowicz was enthusiastic in his welcome of U.S. forces to his city and noted it was an historic occasion, one that would be well-received by the Gdansk population and one which he hoped would be repeated in the future.
During the visit, Adamowicz explained the thousand-year old city was completely destroyed during World War II, but has now been rebuilt and today is a thriving tourist destination, as well as a busy shipping port.
The U.S. forces will arrive to a modern, deep water port constructed less than 10 years ago.
