Fort Leonard Wood community organizations provide several opportunities for readers to connect through book clubs.
According to Joyce Waybright, chief of community services at Bruce C. Clarke Library, book clubs can be a way to meet new people and read books one might not pick up on their own.
The Bruce C. Clarke Library is participating in a Department of Defense World War I themed book club, which includes fiction and non-fiction books as well as movies that cover the subject matter.
"The World War I Book Club is an 18-month adventure," said Lauren Glaettli, community services librarian.
Book club meetings are held monthly and "everyone is welcome," Glaettli said. "You don't have to read the book to come to the book club meetings."
The next meeting will be held at 11:45 a.m. July 27. The book being discussed for July is "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" by Siegfried Sassoon. Kids are welcome to attend, but Glaettli asks parents to remember that children 13 years of age and younger must be "within line of sight of an adult."
Waybright, who has been working at Bruce C. Clarke Library since 1999, said Army libraries are making it easier to participate in book clubs by giving online access to thousands of books and feature chat forums where participants can go to talk about the books.
Glaettli said reading is not for everyone, so the library also has options for those who do not enjoy reading.
"We do carry audiobooks," Waybright said.
Adding that audio books are a solution for those who may not love reading or lack the time to do so.
Other organizations around Fort Leonard Wood have book club opportunities as well.

The staff at Bruce C. Clarke Library said it is possible for organizations and individuals to start their own book club. They have a community room available for reservations to hold meetings. To reserve the room, call or visit the library.
The Bruce C. Clarke Library is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays. They are located in Building 3202 and can be reached by calling 573.563.4113.
