PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colorado -- Following a mission analysis and assessment of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command's staff structure, USASMDC/ARSTRAT recently activated its newest G-staff organization, the G5.
As of June 1, the G5 emerges through the realignment of existing G35 (Plans) and G38 (Strategy, Policy, and Future Initiatives) mission tasks and resources with Col. Tristan S. Higgins taking the lead as the deputy chief of staff, G5.
The G5 is charged with conducting the command's long-range planning and strategic efforts and initiatives explained Higgins. The G5 consists of four divisions. The G51, Strategic Policy Division; the G52, Campaign Strategy and Campaign Plans Division; the G53, Theatre Plans Division; and the G54, Integrated Joint Special Technical Operations Division.
Col. Tom Nguyen, chief of staff, SMDC, said, "The G5 team will develop command, Army, and DoD space, missile defense, and high altitude strategies, policies, and doctrine, while advocating for future Army capability requirements. Moreover, it is chartered to develop campaign and theater support plans and provide integrated joint special technical operations support services.
"The success of the new G5, as with any other organization, relies on leadership and its people," said Nguyen. "Col. Higgins is uniquely qualified to lead this new G-staff entity and will take the reigns as our first deputy chief of staff, G5."
