CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- On May 25, 2017, nearly 70 attendees of the 2017 Global Demil Symposium concluded their week with a tour of Letterkenny Munitions Center.
Guests arrived in the morning by bus and were treated to a tour of several LEMC operations and facilities, which focused on missile maintenance and demilitarization operations.
Visitors toured both the Multiple Launch Rocket System Family of Munitions and Low Cost Reduced Range Practice Rocket facilities. LEMC is designated as the Army's Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Army Tactical Missile System, Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and LCRRPR. LEMC employees perform maintenance, repair, modification, parts reclamation, disassembly, container repair and global mobile maintenance on ATACMS and GMLRS and produce LCRRPR in support training requirements for the U.S. Army and Marines.
Guests also viewed LEMC's Ammonium Perchlorate Rocket Motor Thermal Destruction Facility, a new, one-of-a-kind facility supporting demilitarization of Ammonium Perchlorate Based Composite Rocket Motor. The chamber facilitates an environmentally friendly means to dispose of AP based rocket motors, such as MLRS and Sidewinder rocket motors. The new facility will greatly reduce the need for static burn of rocket motors, reducing both noise and environmental pollution.
"Despite the rainy start, the tour attendees were very pleased with the tour and all of the facilities we were able to see. The employees at each stop were knowledgeable and able to answer the attendees' questions," said Doni Smith, Logistics Management Specialist, Joint Munitions Command South, McAlester, Oklahoma. "I can't thank Ed Averill and his team enough for all of their efforts!"
This is a return trip for the Global Demil Symposium. "The group toured LEMC several years ago. We were thrilled when they asked to come back this year. It gives members of the demil community the opportunity to see our growth in capabilities and operations firsthand," said Ed Averill, Deputy to the Commander, LEMC.
LEMC is located on Letterkenny Army Depot and is a Government-Owned, Government-Operated installation. LEMC conducts regional and global distribution of munitions, provides missile maintenance, and conducts demilitarization of munitions for Joint Forces and international partner nations.
