ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (May 19, 2017) -- Approximately 98 people participated in the Fifth Annual Bike to Work Day, or B2WD, hosted by the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, or ATEC, and the Harford County Government at Aberdeen Proving Ground, or APG, North May 17.

In support of Clean Commute Month, B2WD is an event celebrated across the United States each May to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more people to give biking a try.

"This is a great event to participate in because not only are you helping save the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road, but you are also supporting and promoting a healthy lifestyle for yourself and others," said Gale Sauer, the health and wellness coordinator at ATEC.

Team APG North B2WD participants had the opportunity to either bike from home to work or meet at a designated spot on post to complete a 11.73 mile route around the installation.

Sauer and Col. Gary R. Graves, ATEC's Operations and Plans director, opened up the event by providing welcoming remarks and a safety briefing.

Local vendors from Advanced Eye Care, True Cycling Studio, Bike Doctor, The Bike Shop of Bel Air, APG Recycling Program, APG Commuter Center and APG Pollution Prevention Program cheered on and supported the cyclists through the duration of the bike ride.

The cyclists were provided with breakfast and beverages at the start of the event and prizes donated by local businesses and organizations were awarded at the completion.

Graves presented the B2WD Proclamation for APG North and APG South along with closing remarks at the conclusion of the event.

"This morning, we were not only promoting a healthy and enjoyable alternative to driving, but also working on our physical, mental, and spiritual wellness," Graves said. "Staying resilient is one of the Army's and ATEC's top priorities for military, civilians and contractors."

Alan Doran, the Rideshare coordinator for the Harford County Office of Economic Development announced that ATEC and the U.S. Army Evaluation Center were the winners of the 2017 Bike to Work Team Cycle Challenge and presented them with a trophy showcasing their win.

"The Team Cycle Challenge Award is given to the command who fielded the largest team of cyclists who signed up to participate in the bike to work event," Doran said.

Sauer, Graves and Doran each thanked the participants, venders and sponsors for helping make the event a success.

"We are number two in registration, just behind Baltimore City," Doran said.

Special thanks to the regional sponsors to include Harford County Public Library, Harford Transit Link and Healthy Harford and Cecil County.
