REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center held a town hall March 24 at the Bob Jones Auditorium providing updates to employees and emphasizing AMRDEC's role in providing readiness to the U.S. Army.
Acting Director Jeff Langhout's focus was on why AMRDEC's role is so critical. He first showed a video of a TedTalk led by Sim Sinek he reveals a common thread between leadership examples Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers. "There are leaders and there are those who lead." He also explains the "golden circle" which centers on asking the question "Why?" Sinek explains, "People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it. What you do proves what you believe."
This video segued to his next slide defining why AMRDEC exists. A quote displayed from Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. Mark Milley stated, "It's simple really. We the United States Army, as part of the joint force, we exist for a singular purpose and none other…to fight and win wars in defense of the United States of America. That's it. It's that simple." Langhout followed up saying, "We believe in the mission of the U.S. Army and our Army needs us. We are the smart people behind the development of the weapon systems. We are very solid on our mission and focus on the way ahead."
Langhout emphasized AMRDEC readiness by asking, "Why do you show up for work? What are you producing?" He covered other points, including acknowledgement of the temporary leadership, encouraging everyone to work on their emotional intelligence, explaining early retirement options and the ongoing hiring freeze.
Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Gabram stopped by to make a few comments. "We are in critical times now. Your contribution is really important." He explained how trust, team, relationships and attitude all work together to make the Army team stronger. "I want to thank you for what you do. I want to tell you how important it is. I want to give you some perspective."
Langhout also presented the Superior Civilian Service Award to Amber Marsh for her service while serving as Project Lead for the HIMARS Tactical Embedded Software Modernization for Precision Fires Rocket and Missile Systems Project Office. Her certificate signed by Barry Pike, Program Executive Office, Missiles and Space reads, "Marsh's leadership, dedication to duty and Warfighting spirit to modernize launcher software will have a lasting impact on the readiness of the Army's field Artillery Launchers. March's technical expertise and savvy leadership have been key to this programs success. Her honorable service and dedication to duty reflect great credit upon herself, PEO MS and the U.S. Army."
