FORT HOOD, Texas -- Soldiers from 8th Brigade Engineer Battalion competed against each other on Black Jack Field Jan. 20 during the Trojan Horse challenge.
The challenge included various stations where the companies would compete against each other for bragging rights and honor of holding onto the 8th BEB "Entrenching Tool" trophy.
The unconventional trophy is used to remind the current 8th BEB Soldiers of Pfc. Melvin Brown, a 8th BEB Soldier who fought in the Korean War and whom after running out of ammunition, advanced on the enemy armed only with an entrenching tool.
"We have this competition to celebrate the spirit of Pfc. Melvin Brown, who embodied the warrior ethos," said Lt. Col. Robert Kimmel. "In the face of overwhelming odds, he never quit and he never accepted defeat. The Trojan Horse challenge builds our unit esprit de corps while putting these teams to the test."
A four-person litter carry, a Humvee push, tire flipping, 10-person log sit-ups and a sprinting station made up the Trojan Horse Challenge. Laughter, clapping and good-natured ribbing could be heard at each of the stations.
"Melvin Brown's legacy inspired the Rough Riders to perform to the best of their ability and we are honored to move forward with the symbol of his courage," said Capt. William Byrd, Alpha Company Commander, 8BEB.
The Trojan Horse challenge comes at a time where the strength of this battalion, as well as the entire 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, will be challenged during an upcoming rotation at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, Calif.
"We were proud to participate in this challenge, it allowed us to grow as a team and continue to build our physical readiness," said Pvt. Joshua Giddings, 8BEB Soldier.
