WIESBADEN, Germany -- After two days of intense competition, the top career counselors and retention advisors in U.S. Army Europe, top noncommissioned officers in each category were named, Dec. 12, 2016.

Sgt. 1st Class Aimee Fields, a career counselor assigned to the 212th Combat Support Hospital (CSH), 30th Medical Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, based in Kaiserslautern, Germany, has earned the title of the 2016 U.S. Army Europe Career Counselor of the year.

Sgt. 1st Class Brian Green, a reserve component career counselor assigned to U.S. Army Europe Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, has earned the title of the 2016 U.S. Army Europe Reserve Component Career Counselor of the year.

Sgt. David Fisher, assigned to 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command, based in Kaiserslautern, Germany, has earned the title of the 2016 U.S. Army Europe Retention Noncommissioned Officer of the year.

Career counselors conduct retention and re-enlistment interviews, determine Soldiers' eligibility to re-enlist or extend their current enlistments; review re-enlistment and extension documents; coordinate retention ceremonies and advise commanders on all areas of the retention program.

Green explained that his motivation for being a career counselor is the ability to help soldiers, and credits his local retention team in helping him to prepare and succeed in the competition.

The annual competition tests counselors on a variety of job and Soldier skills to select the best career counselor within the separate units across Europe under USAREUR command. The two-day event includes a standard Army physical fitness test consisting of two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups and a two-mile run, or 2-mile walk; a timed written test; and an appearance before a board of sergeants major who tested competitors on their retention knowledge, skills, and military bearing.

In addition to the three events, judges assessed each competitor based on a submission packet that described their goals and accomplishments.

Fields looks forward to representing USAREUR at the next level of the competition.

"Retention is a huge part of the Army" stated Fields. "To be successful in your job, study, know the required information, and seek mentorship from those more knowledgeable and experience than yourself."

Fields and Green will go on to represent USAREUR at the Secretary of the Army's Career Counselor of the Year Competition in Washington, D.C. in January.
