During this Columbus Day weekend, leaders at all levels must emphasize safety awareness to prevent serious incidents among our ranks. Command Sgt. Major Binford and I ask that every Soldier, Family member and Civilian to do his/her part in protecting our force.

One of the root causes of incidents within our ranks is individual failure to pay attention, with the majority of incidents occurring during off-duty hours. To reduce the number of incidents, every leader must be engaged with our Soldiers and ensure that we are applying appropriate risk management in our on and off-duty activities. Failure to maintain situational awareness, being in a hurry, being complacent and NOT implementing mitigation factors are the major causes of injury and loss of property. The 8th TSC has had a variety of incidents this fiscal year and unfortunately most, if not all, could have been avoided by utilizing the proper risk mitigations of those personnel directly involved.

Soldiers, Family members and Civilians of the 8th TSC - ensure that we identify and properly mitigate the risk, conduct safety counseling regularly, and emphasize personal safety risk management at all times. Be an excellent "Battle Buddy", watch out for those who may endanger themselves or others, and be prepared to intervene before it is too late.

Your active and timely involvement NOW will help protect our most valuable resource: the Soldiers, Family members and Civilians of the 8th TSC! Thank you again for your service to this great nation, and enjoy your well-deserved break.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday! "Army Safe is Army Strong."

SUSTAIN THE FORCE!
