MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU, Romania - Soldiers from 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion's Task Force Warhammer, provide maintenance and recovery support during logistics operations at Atlantic Resolve-South.

Maintainers have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills, while gaining further experience in the field throughout AR-S, where demand for maintenance support is high.

The necessity to maintain a fleet's mission capable status and to complete recovery operations is the priority of a maintainer.

The opportunity has presented itself for maintainers to share their knowledge with ammunition handlers and material handling equipment operators to maintain their equipment readiness. During weekly command maintenance, maintainers give in-depth classes on specific vehicle components for operators to educate Soldiers on maintenance procedures, vehicle system operations, and troubleshooting.

"I'm confident whenever the operators conduct their 10-level tasks, they will be of great assistance to maintainers. The Soldiers have gained a vast amount of knowledge in installing operator level parts, and maintenance tasks," said Spc. Edgardo Melendez, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to Task Force Warhammer. "I'm pleased to have the opportunity to instruct classes and be evaluated as an instructor."

Maintenance operations include help from KBR contractors for facility and tool room assistance, and Supply Support Activity operations for parts and vehicle lubricants. Maintainers have created a partnership with Echo Company, 3-501 Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Armored Division, Combat Aviation Brigade, by assisting with wrecker support and cross training between both units.

"As a U.S. Army combat veteran and maintainer myself, I am very pleased to assist Task Force Warhammer," said Nelson Castro, a KBR company maintainer. "It's a great honor to support and exchange ideas with the young skilled mechanics."

Mechanics from 18th CSSB have worked closely with Soldiers throughout the battalion maintaining the fleet, which consists of material handling equipment, wheeled vehicles, and fuel tankers, totaling 26 pieces of equipment.

Maintenance tasks consist of parts install, troubleshooting procedures, parts, & supply request from the supply warehouse, hydraulic hose fabrication, and vehicle tests and services.

Our maintainers have stretched their capabilities and skills, created partnerships, and exercised expedient recovery. These efforts have resulted in leadership opportunities, and mission readiness for future operations.
