The Force is with Barr Memorial Library's "Star Wars" Reads program, which runs Sept. 1 through Oct. 8. The reading program is simple and broken into two categories--a program for Jedi "Padawan learners" (ages 0-17) and Jedi "Knights" (ages 18 and older).

To complete the program, participants must read any five "Star Wars" books, complete a reading log and turn it in for a chance to win prizes. Grand prizes will be awarded through a random drawing. Reading logs are due to the library by 7:30 p.m., Oct. 6, and the winners will be announced at the library's "Star Wars" Reads Day celebration Oct. 8.

Prizes will be awarded to both categories of participants and include a Legendary Yoda (an animated miniature of the Jedi Master), a remote control X-Wing fighter and a large Stormtrooper figure. Weekly prizes will also be awarded via random drawings of those who have completed the program.

Those completing the program may also receive one of two incentives: a copy of "The Star Wars Craft Book" by Bonnie Burton or "The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and Creatures" by David West Reynolds. Copies are limited and only available while supplies last.

Participants limited to active duty Soldier, spouse, Family member, retired military, Department of Defense civilian, National Guard or reservist. Participants must be eligible for a regular library account. Full participant eligibility defined under AR 215-7.1.

The "Star Wars" Reads program is part of a monthlong library "Star Wars" celebration.

Kenner Star Wars: A Galaxy of Toys, 1978-1985, is an exhibit on display at the library Sept. 6 through Oct. 8. Produced in association with the General George S. Patton Museum, it features action figures, toys and playsets from the vintage toy line. The exhibit includes a timeline of the toys' production and facts about the toys that thrilled a generation of children.

Feel the Force at Barr Memorial Library Oct. 8, with the "Star Wars" Reads Day celebration. The day will be fun-filled and packed with "Star Wars" events, including a visit from the 501st Legion, a costume contest and author event.

Events begin at 10 a.m. with "A Galaxy Not So Far, Far Away: Shooting Star Wars." Photojournalist, "Star Wars" enthusiast and honorary Mandalorian Merc Robert Cunningham will share photographs and details about his visits to some of the very real-world locations that served as some of "Star Wars"' most iconic locations. Participants will be taken to the forest moon of Endor, Princess Leia's home world of Alderaan, the snowy ice planet Hoth, the royal palace of Naboo and the harsh desert of Tatooine. As part of his presentation, Cunningham will also discuss the Save Lars project, which restored Luke Skywalker's desert home.

The forces of the Galactic Empire in the form of the 501st Legion, Midsouth Garrison, will return to the library from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The 501st Legion is the world's largest imperial costuming organization, spanning the United States and 59 other countries. The Legion is an all-volunteer organization that promotes interest in "Star Wars" through building and wearing screen quality costumes and by facilitating the use of the costumes for "Star Wars"-related events as well as local community charity and volunteer work. Don't be surprised if the agents of the Empire are joined by the Mandalorian Mercs, friends of the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett. Entreaties have also been made to the Jedi, the Rebels and the Resistance, in hopes that they too will visit.

The appearance of some of "Star Wars"' most iconic characters will be a perfect opportunity to grab an impromptu or posed picture. "Star Wars"-themed selfie props and the chance to step into another world (through the use of green screen photography) will allow participants to go to a galaxy far, far away, creating many memories in the process.

The impressive, most impressive costume contest at 2 p.m. is time for "Star Wars" fans to shine in their own costumes. Prizes for first, second and third place and honorable mentions will be awarded. Those participating in costume will receive an incentive just for being part of the fun. Limited quantities apply. Costumes will be judged on creativity and enthusiasm.

The fun concludes with a special "Star Wars" Authors at Your Library event featuring Dr. David West Reynolds at 3 p.m. Reynolds discusses and signs "The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and Creatures." In his books, Reynolds, who holds a Ph.D. in archaeology, examines both the props and characters of the original film trilogy, including how a Fort Knox Soldier helped shape a key "Star Wars" universe icon. The work was directly produced with support from Lucasfilm, which offered Reynolds special access to the Skywalker Ranch archives. Copies of his books will be available for purchase at the event.
