REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- An Army civilian enjoys her job and ensures proper procedures are followed while also ensuring she visits places far and wide.

Dana Henslee, auditor, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command Internal Review and Audit Compliance Office, work with the command's G-1, G-4 and G-8 for audit readiness, which is a requirement that is mandated by Congress, to ensure that the command provides answers and documentation to support any samples for external auditors the Department of Defense has hired.

"The mission of the internal review office is to assess the effectiveness of internal controls to prevent misuse of funds or other resources and to determine compliance with laws, regulations and policies and procedures," Henslee said. "We also support the commands audit readiness efforts and provide liaison support for external audits.

"I enjoy the diversity in what we do," she added. "Every day is something different."

Henslee started her government career June 15, 1987, with the Army Audit Office and came to SMDC on June 1, 1992. At SMDC, she began in the Internal Review Office, and seven years later moved to the Business Initiative Office. She was there for 13 years before moving back to internal review in 2012.

"My favorite part of the command is the people," Henslee said. "Because I have been here so long and because of the positions I have held, I have had the opportunity to travel to various locations within the command and to become acquainted with a lot of folks. I enjoy knowing people on a personal level not just here in Huntsville, but in other locations as well. I like that I have friends all throughout the command.

"Always do what is right," she added. "Don't align yourself with somebody just because of their position or because they are your friend. Know the rules and do the right thing."

While away from the office, Henslee said that she loves to travel.

"I have a goal to visit all 50 of the United States," Henslee said. "I have visited 41 of them. I am only missing Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Delaware. I want to visit them all because each state has something different to offer. Each state has its own beauty, something different to offer and something different to see and experience. I want to experience it all."

Besides traveling, she also likes to decorate cakes.

"I took cake decorating classes together with my cousins and a friend, and I love it even though I don't have enough time to do it as much as I would like," Henslee said. "I have not perfected my skills as much as I would like to, but I still love doing it."
