403rd AFSB Korea University student interns visit Camp Humphreys

CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea -- The 403rd Army Field Support Brigade provided Korea University student interns with an expanded view of the organization's operational mission at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, May 13. The interns visited the Logistics Readiness Center-Humphreys and the Army Field Support Battalion-Korea Battalion Logistics Support Team offices.

At the LRC, Ronnie McCullough, chief, Plans and Operations Division, introduced the interns to members of his staff.

John Bolton, acting director, provided an overview about the transformation of Camp Humphreys.

"We learned that in the very near future, the U.S. bases at Camp Casey (Area I) and Yongsan (Area II) will close and some functions will transfer to Camp Humphreys, making the LRC-Humphreys a 'super' LRC," said Chae Yeong, Korea University student intern.

At the end of the briefing, Johnnie Jones, Central Issue Facility manager, and Chi Son Choe, assistant chief, Supply and Services Division, provided a tour of the CIF. The CIF manages and supplies Soldiers with items for training and warfighting.

"During the tour, we experienced wearing the bulletproof vest and saw the Soldiers' gear for the first time," said Yu Jung Lim, Korea University student intern. "It was very heavy, so we understood now why Soldiers need to work hard on physical training."

The two interns also received a window tour of the installation.

"We learned that Camp Humphreys will be the largest camp in Korea and we were impressed to see how big the camp was," said Yu Jung. "There were many construction sites including a family zone consisting of a commissary, church, school, theater and so on. We were impressed that the U.S. Army tries to guarantee a comfortable life inside the base to the U.S. Soldiers and their families."

Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Hardin, noncommissioned officer in charge, LRC-Humphreys, provided a tour of the transportation maintenance facility explaining its purpose and what types of vehicles are maintained.

Both Chae Yeong and Yu Jung indicated that the most impressive thing for them was the helicopter tour.

"It was a very special experience for us since it was the first time we saw real helicopters up close," said Yu Jung.

"We were happy and excited since we were allowed to see two Blackhawks and board a Chinook helicopter," said Chae Yeong. "We will remember this moment for a long time."

At the end of the tour, both interns stated they wanted to thank Col. Michael Siegl, 403rd AFSB commander, and the staffs who provided tours for the opportunity to see Camp Humphreys.
