FORT SILL, Okla., June 9, 2016 -- Country music singer and star of the hit television show "Nashville," Charles Esten, will join other country musicians for the post's annual summer concert, June 25.
"To be honest, I love getting a chance to play for the military and military families," said Esten, who also was a regular on "Who's Line is it Anyway." "First of all, I'm so grateful for the countless sacrifices, the day-to-day minute stuff as well as the biggest sacrifices that can be made. I feel honored any time I get a chance to do that. And secondarily they just tend to be an incredibly good audience. They make you feel so welcome. The connection obviously that there is between country music and our military -- it's a beautiful thing."
This will not be the first military performance for Esten who performed at Fort Campbell with fellow "Nashville" co-stars, Connie Ritton, who plays Rayna James, and Lennon Stella and Maisy Stella, who play Maddie and Daphne Conrad. The weather was "bitter, bitter cold," according to Esten however he was impressed with the enthusiasm of the service members which he said "never waned."
"I trust the weather is going to be a little better in June at Fort Sill," he said laughing. "But that was us getting to show (the connection between country music and military) on the show ("Nashville.") Now this is me getting to make that connection as well and I can't wait."
Esten said it was important for him to connect with the military because of his personal connection with the military. Esten's father-in-law, who recently passed away, was a military veteran and his brother-in-law was a career Soldier.
"It's not lost on me the connection between the freedoms that not only I have, but that my family has, that our country has and the sacrifices and the hard, hard work that goes into maintaining those freedoms," said Esten. "I'm just so grateful for anybody who takes that calling and steps up to make that their life's work."
The event, organized by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR), will take place on Polo Field. Esten will perform along with country music star and recording artist David Nail, Clare Bowen, who plays Scarlett O'Connor in "Nashville," and country artist Cassadee Pope, Season 3 winner of NBC's "The Voice."
"We work very closely with a concert promoter to search out the best talent for our area based on interest, sales and ratings," said Brenda Spencer-Ragland, FMWR director. "We then look at dates and availability. We are very pleased with our lineup. They have a great following. It's a fantastic grouping, and I simply could not be more pleased."
Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 6:30 p.m. Tickets prices are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased at Adventure Travel and area EZ GO locations. The show is open to the public. It will include duets from the "Nashville stars," Bowen and Esten, to includes songs from the show as well as cover songs and original pieces.
"(It's) a nice combination as well," said Esten. "You're going to see a little of Deacon and you're gonna see a whole lot of Chip (Esten). The same holds true with Scarlett and Clare (Bowen)."
