FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 8, 2016) -- Retired Army Col. Jack Story, owner of A&J Farms, believes in the importance of children learning about farming. He encourages Families with children to visit his farm to pick their own berries and see where the fruit actually comes from.
Story told about a time when a little boy was shocked to discover that apples came from trees.
"He thought apples came from the grocery store," Story said.
Before Story was the owner of A&J Farms, he was the executive officer of the surgeon's office of Forces Command at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. He retired in 1985 and made his way to Pine Mountain, Georgia with his wife Anne. They started selling their produce in 1993.
A&J Farms has around 1,300 blueberry bushes and 15-16 fig trees. The berries are never sprayed with pesticides.
A&J Farms offers the opportunity to pick-your-own berries for $10 a gallon. Those with a military ID get a $2 discount. Blueberry picking will begin June 9 and run for about six weeks. Figs will be available in July.
"We provide quality fruit for people and a time to pick and see what's on a real farm," Story said. "Bring the children. Let them eat. Let them see stuff grow."
A&J Farms is located at 6876 Hamilton Pleasant Grove Road, Pine Mountain, Georgia 31822. For more information, call 706-663-8352.
