Ustka, Poland -- Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and the 174th Ohio National Guard Air Defense Artillery Brigade along with partners from the Polish 3rd Surface to Air Missile Brigade conducted a multinational mass casualty exercise June 7 to highlight the interoperability of both nation's medical forces.
Late in the afternoon, as a hard day of work was drawing to an end, a simulated assault by an unseen enemy notionally injured two American and one Polish Soldier. First responders were on the scene almost instantly and they began to conduct tactical combat casualty care. The patients were promptly treated and evacuated to the nearest triage center or role 1 medical facility. Once they arrived the medical team realized that the exercise had only just begun.
"It was total chaos at first," explained Staff Sgt. Mia Eubanks, a 68W Health Care Specialist, "but then everyone's training kicked in and they all started to work together."
The medical staff at the triage center had to receive, prioritize, and treat over 15 Soldiers with simulated injuries. Luckily this triage team was fully staffed with highly trained medical professionals from both Poland and the United States. The members of this multinational team worked side by side caring for casualties and preparing them for medical evacuation to the next echelon of care.
"The goal of this event was to create a MASCAL large enough to require communication and coordination between both our countries," stated Cpt. Miguel Ordoñez, the Physician's Assistant for 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, "It was a tremendous success."
At the conclusion of the event all personnel had been successfully treated and evacuated expeditiously, and both nations had proven that they could efficiently interoperate in the event of a medical emergency.
