FORT SILL, Okla. -- Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) document services has been providing the document production and scanning needs of the Department of Defense for 65 years. A quick walk through the facility implies this is not Kinko's.

This is Kinko's on steroids. Military style.

The Fort Sill location has three electronic duplicating system technicians (EDST) on staff to accommodate copy, scanning, printing and other needs. The on-post DLA is a one-stop shop capable of handling everything from pre-production design, desktop publishing and graphic design services. Some of the things they produce are: blue books, business cards, letterheads, notepads, invitations, newsletters, brochures, workbooks, carbonless forms and the list goes on.

The DLA can also produce banners and posters of various sizes. Larger posters and banners are often outsourced to other DLA facilities.

"Sometimes we have to transfer a job out to another DLA facility that is more equipped for that task and in turn they transfer jobs to us that we specialize in," said Wendy Baggett electronic duplicating system technician.

The customer can logon to their website to submit a request or call to schedule a one- on-one with one of the EDST's.

"We prefer the client to come in and discuss their needs and how they want a product to look. They bring us a rough draft and we clean it up and make a proof for them to sign off on prior to printing hundreds of copies," said Baggett.

Clients may use any of the Office suite or Adobe products for their initial draft or completed projects. Microsoft Word or Visio are good choices as well as Adobe Acrobat or PageMaker.

"We tend to stick with the basics for software that we recommend they use," said Baggett. "We try to discourage customers from submitting something in independent software because we may not have the program to open it."

The DLA does not print paper products in glossy finish but with the high quality toner or ink and high heat used, it comes out looking very near glossy, said Baggett. They do offer a wide variety of colors to choose from for card stock.

"We run a gamut from 20 pound up to 110 pound stock," she added.

The DLA can handle small jobs, from printing a few business cards, to producing large-volume books.

"The largest job we have had, as far as volume, was 500 copies of a 1,500 page book," Baggett said. "That's why I love it here. You might think it's the same thing every day but we constantly face new challenges with each project."

The DLA is broken down into 10 office groups with 152 offices worldwide. The Fort Sill office works within the Oklahoma City group directly under the supervision of Tinker Air Force office. The headquarters for the DLA organization is located in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

You can schedule a meeting to discuss your printing needs by calling them directly at 442-2118 or 2119. You may also logon via their website at www.dso.documentservices.dla.mil. Business hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
