As the Army continues to evolve after nearly 15 years of sustained combat operations while grappling with the uncertainties of a complex world, the mission command philosophy remains the foundation of unified land operations. Since the release of Army Doctrine Publication 6-0, Mission Command in 2012, there is a growing number of real-world examples of Army leaders at all levels effectively executing the six principles of mission command to ensure mission success.
Lt. Gen. Robert B. Brown, the commanding general of the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, has overseen the publication of a collection of vignettes and articles from across the Army that seeks to sharpen the understanding of mission command. The book, Mission Command in the 21st Century: Empowering to Win in a Complex World, will be released on April 25 by the Army Press.
"Mission command is critical to win in a complex world. It takes trust and empowerment and we must ensure that every leader at every level understands and applies it," said Brown.
The articles offers an expanded view of the practice of mission command in widely varied settings, according to Dr. Donald Wright, the deputy director of the Army Press.
"As case studies emerge from the many operations going on around the world, it is important that we capture those studies and make them available to the entire force," explained Wright.
