FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 23 2016) -- Students are getting active while helping children suffering from heart problems.

As part of the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart campaign, students from Stowers Elementary School jump rope to get active and be heart healthy, while raising money for people with heart issues.

Kylah Lopes, a second-grader at Stowers Elementary School, has a goal to raise $1,000 in honor of her two great grandfathers who suffered from heart complications. Adam Weinbaum, Stowers Elementary School gym teacher, said Kylah has raised $215 so far - the highest of anyone in the school.

"It's fun knowing you're helping people," Kylah said.

Kylah said she sends thank you notes to everyone who donates.

Weinbaum said he likes people helping people, especially those with heart conditions. He also said the program is promoting the importance of being active and healthy.

"It's a good way to stay fit and active, and it's fun," Weinbaum said. "They raise money to help people ... it's a win-win all the way around."

The fundraiser began March 8 and will go until April 29, Parks said.
